What an adorable porcelain panda it is! Its head is slightly raised. Its eyes are widely open. And the four little claws of it are working together in holding bamboos so that it could glut itself with the delicacies! It looks like that the panda has realized that you are looking at it and it's trying to give a pose and waiting for you to take a picture!

You might be wondering that there is no "American characteristic" about this present since porcelain is a specialty of China and panda is China's national treasure. You may ask why President Nixon selected this porcelain panda as gift. Nixon once said that: "It's not the gifts that count, but the thought of my first visit to China in 1972 and Shanghai Communique. The best gift is still not among these, but the friendship of American people that we've brought to you --- we treasure such friendship."

As the first American president that visited China, Nixon opened up the gate to Sino-US relations in 1972. Chinese government presented the US with two pandas--- "Lingling" and "Xingxing" at that point. This shows the special meaning of panda in Sino-US relations. 4 years later, Nixon made his second visit to China with the gentle and adorable panda as the envoy of peace, which not only indicated and extended his happiness and friendly affection toward Guilin, but expressed his heartfelt friendship and sincere respect for the Chinese people that had made a huge contribution toward the splendid ceramic art.
