Peacock-green glaze, also known as facui in China, originated from the folk kilns of the Song and Yuan dynasties, first appeared in Cizhou Kiln of the Song Dynasty and matured in Jingdezhen Kiln by Chenghua’s reign of Ming. Peacock-green is a kind of low-temperature colored glaze with copper oxide as colorant, which is named so since its color is as emerald green as peacock feathers. This Peacock-Green Prunus Vase with Black Peony Designs is a product of Cizhou Kiln. Designs of peonies with twining branches are painted in ochre on white engobe, which are enveloped in peacock-green glaze so as to make the designs look blackish. The prunus vase is also matched with a bell-shaped orange twistable glaze lid, which constitutes stark contrast with the color of the vase and makes it graceful and exquisite.
