Arcade-House

This is a restored streetscape of the old Guilin. The buildings at both sides are known as arcade-houses. Arcade-house is a modern commercial building, which integrates commercial and residential functions by being constructed with a shop in the front or on the ground floor and a residence behind or upstairs. An arcade-house is generally composed of a roof, a body and a base. The part above the second floor stretches out to the red line on the street and is propped up by columns, so as to bring up the sidewalk. The arcade-house of Guilin prevailed in the Republic of China Period. The essential business streets in Guilin at that time were mostly applied with the architectural pattern of arcade. As for the people here, arcade-house not only plays the role of a commercial architecture, but also carries one part of warm civil culture of the old Guilin.
